To Block or to Heal? You Decide.
Brought to you from the N.E.E.D.S.Wellness Team

Acid-blocking drugs, specifically proton pump inhibitors, are among the most over prescribed drugs in the U.S. They work by blocking acid secretion, limiting the amount of hydrochloric acid in the stomach, thus relieving the pain associated with ulcers, heartburn, gastritis, and reflux.Unfortunately, these drugs also cause hypochlorhydria, a deficiency of hydrochloric acid, which can inhibit digestion and nutrient absorption. Since hydrochloric acid is essential for mineral absorption, particularly calcium, to block it for years on end can lead to significant bone loss.

A recent study, published in JAMA, looked to determine long-term use of proton pump inhibitors increased the risk of hip fractures. Researchers reviewed 16 years of data collected on over 135,000 "healthy" patients and over 13,000 patients with hip fracture, all of whom were over age 50. They found that those who used the acid blockers for more than one year increased their risk of hip fracture by 44%. If the person took higher doses, the risk more than doubled.

Clearly, long-term acid suppression is not an effective method of healing stomach problems. A better approach is to heal the stomach lining—the protective mucosal barrier responsible for preventing the necessary acid from damaging stomach cells. Zinc carnosine, the active ingredient in Zinlori 75™, from Metagenics, acts to mend stomach cells and those that make acid, as well as aid in the repair of the gastric lining. Thoroughly studied, zinc carnosine was shown to heal ulcers and gastritis in two months. It is used in Japan as a prescription drug for just such purposes. Zinc carnosine addresses the cause of the stomach problem without the negative side effects of bone loss!
